Design Ideal Data Communications for each item on your Wish List

On the right side of the document where you are making your Data Wish List, envision an Ideal Data Communication for each item—a plan for people to communicate that item on your Data Wish List. Think about our infrastructure design questions here. Who would share the information with whom, how, and how often? What barriers to sharing would they have to confront? (E.g., data not stored in an accessible place; people unable or anxious to meet to talk.) And what channel would you use for the information-sharing? (You could imagine an in-person conversation about how a student is doing; a communication using a phone or the Internet; or a communication using a piece of paper, like a paper report card, a comment in a notebook, or a note mailed home.)

These are important decisions. How people decide to collect and share data about students’ progress and development shapes what people learn and discuss about young people and about their own efforts to support young people. The words used on a report card summing up a child’s progress; the categories organizing a portfolio of student work; or the questions teachers ask colleagues in a conference each shape routine conversations about how students are doing and what adults might do next to support them.

Start making your Data Wish List and considering your Ideal Data Communication of each item.

To get started, let’s recall some big issues from Part 1 of this book, to think about designing Data Talk with equity in mind.
